As reported and monitored by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the World Health Organization (WHO) and many other agencies, the 2019 novel coronavirus, otherwise known as COVID-19, is a growing international health crisis. Affecting 112 countries and territories – including China and other Asian regions, Europe and North and South America, health professionals and authorities must constantly assess risk for potential exposures and implement public health actions.
To help provide communication on the global health emergency, TargetSolutions’ Community Resources features valuable information about COVID-19, providing health and safety professionals with the ability to access and share related files with departments across the country.
Background and Current Status of 2019 Novel Coronavirus
This new strain of the coronavirus was first identified in Wuhan, China. Since then, China reported tens of thousands of cases of the respiratory infection and so far has confirmed 3,123 deaths in China and hundreds of deaths in various countries. On January 30th, the United States confirmed its first case of the illness and has risen to more than 200.
The CDC reports the infection is spread mainly through contact of respiratory droplets from an ill person to another person’s mouth, nose, eyes or is inhaled into the lungs. Researchers are still working to determine if a person can also get the virus via contact with a contaminated surface – although it’s not thought to be a primary source.
Guidance for the interim for US public health authorities suggest frequent handwashing, active monitoring, isolation and quarantine of potentially infected individuals.
